The pros and cons of having the inside scoop on real estate

Working with the property market has changed the way I experience the world. In the past, I would have noticed when a door in a hotel or condo squeaked or stuck; now I examine the quality of the fittings and wonder where they were sourced. Before, I might have been annoyed at an unfriendly front desk person, now I think about how it reflects on the consistency of the brand and the management company (though still, perhaps, feel annoyed).  I used to see a building and see, well… a building. Now, I see a developer, an architect, an interior designer, a construction crew, a public relations team and so much more.

Peeking behind the curtain of any industry—whether hospitality or Hollywood, fashion or real estate—is always a double-edged sword. On one hand you gain information that helps you make better choices, and you appreciate what goes into the final product. On the other hand you see the dark side, the way some corners get cut and some deals get done. Even worse, you start thinking in jargon—when would I have used words like ‘fittings’ to describe hinges or ‘sanitary ware’ to describe a faucet?—and lingo (‘boost’ and ‘boast’ come to mind) and you can’t stop.

This may be a temporary state, like the med student who becomes a hypochondriac, or I may be permanently altered. But as I approach my six month mark in the industry, I know it’s only the tip of the iceberg.
